A successful Kickstarter campaign funded the game. The lead designer characterized Hyper Light Drifter as a mix between the SNES title The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and the dungeon-crawler Diablo. The game is reminiscent of older 8-bit or 16-bit titles, and is, indeed, made as a homage to such games. Hyper Light Drifter, first released in 2016, is a 2D action RPG developed by Heart Machine. The release of the two games is the third time this month that the Epic Game Store has put two games out for free, surely in an effort to attract more users to download and use the Epic Games Store launcher. Both post-apocalyptic action role-playing games are now free until August 22, which is next Thursday. Those titles are Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden and Hyper Light Drifter.
